Kamala Harris Defends Economic Plans and Navigates Foreign Policy Challenges in 60 Minutes Interview

Vice President Kamala Harris conducted a comprehensive interview on CBS’s 60 Minutes on Monday, answering challenging foreign policy issues and defending her economic policies. Since Harris and Donald Trump are tied in the 2024 presidential contest, the vice president has increased her media appearances on several platforms as part of a calculated campaign effort.

In a recent interview with CBS’s Bill Whitaker, Kamala Harris was asked how she plans to fund her economic proposals. These include building millions of new homes, offering tax breaks to new parents, and providing down-payment assistance to first-time homebuyers. Harris stood by her plan to raise taxes on millionaires and large corporations. However, Whitaker raised concerns about her ability to win over Congress. Harris confidently stated that strong leadership could convince lawmakers to support her agenda.

On foreign policy, Harris addressed the U.S. relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. She stressed the importance of the U.S.-Israel alliance but did not call Netanyahu a “close ally.” Her comments came just before the anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel, as tensions with Hezbollah in Lebanon continue to rise.

Regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Harris also took a strong stand, rejecting any peace negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin that do not involve Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. She attacked Trump’s handling of the war, saying that Putin would have already seized power in Kyiv under his direction.

During the conversation, the vice president discussed domestic topics, such as gun ownership. Harris, who has previously discussed owning a Glock for personal defense, confirmed her belief in self-defense while mocking her shooting skills.

During the interview, Tim Walz, his running mate, also mentioned their working relationship. Walz recognized prior mistakes but stressed his dedication to honesty, comparing himself with Trump, whom he described as a “pathological liar.” This appearance on 60 Minutes is part of Harris’ bigger media blitz as she runs for the president.
