According to security agencies, President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20 has been pegged as a “potential target” for violent extremists amid the increasingly volatile political climate. However, even without specific credible threats, the authorities are bracing for multiple scenarios that might disrupt the event.
Agencies like the FBI, Secret Service, and Capitol Police reveal a joint threat assessment, exposing risks from foreign and domestic extremists, lone actors, and protest groups. Ranging from bomb hoaxes to drone attacks, potential threats are even ascribed to the involvement of Iran, including instances of online assassination talks by pro-Iranian organizations after the killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani in 2020.
Security will be enhanced by a massive deployment of 25,000 law enforcement and military personnel. Washington D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith confirmed that 4,000 officers will be deployed, supplemented by 1,000 Capitol Police officers. Officials have coordinated with the Pentagon and National Guard for added support, ensuring a visible and comprehensive security apparatus.
Still, an assessment of the threat also shows an increased trend of social acceptance of political violence. Incidents at the Capitol, such as one man entering the building with weapons and another setting a vehicle on fire, underscore heightened tension levels.
The current threat landscape is more dangerous than during 2021’s Capitol riots, former counterterrorism official John Cohen said. “This inauguration faces more volatile and dangerous conditions,” Cohen said.
There are expected protests, with permits issued to several groups. Agencies are preparing for unrest, especially following the recent Gaza-related demonstrations that have disrupted Capitol Hill.
The officials say public safety is their number one priority as they ensure a safe environment for the swearing-in ceremony amidst heightened risks.
