A massive winter storm is about to affect 14 U.S. states today, packing heavy snow, freezing rain, and unsafe road conditions. Winter storm warnings have been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) for various regions, warning residents of the harsh weather conditions across the central and eastern parts of the United States.
A winter storm warning is issued when snowfall accumulates at least six inches in 12 hours or eight inches in 24 hours, or when half an inch of sleet is forecast. These are more hazardous than normal winter weather advisories, which are issued for lesser snowfalls, or winter storm watches, which signal the possibility of severe weather.
Winter weather advisories are currently in place for 28 states, and flash flood watches cover 11 states. The advisories are in place because the storm is expected to produce hazardous driving conditions, particularly in places such as Milwaukee, Chicago, Grand Rapids, and Detroit. The NWS has forecast that the heavy bursts of snow can come down as much as a rate of one inch an hour, especially around evening rush hour, and traveling becomes unsafe.
In addition to snow, the storm is also delivering a combination of sleet and freezing rain, which will raise the threat level of power outages and tree damage. The weather service is recommending residents stay off the roads and prepare for potential disruptions.
The source of the storm is traced back to a high-pressure system in the Arctic, which is forcing cold air southward over the U.S. Simultaneously, the Gulf’s moisture is heading north, adding to the storm’s intensity. When this system converges in a low-pressure region, it is causing the winter weather now sweep through the area.
Apart from the ice, sleet, and snow, the storm is also anticipated to disrupt normal life quite heavily. When the storm advances east, it is probable to impact millions of individuals and make them face numerous hazards all over. The best option is to avoid driving on the roads if at all possible and remain prepared for the possibility of power failures.
Residents are advised to keep an eye on local weather conditions and take heed of all warnings and advisories issued by the National Weather Service to remain safe throughout this significant winter storm.
