The University of Miami officially appointed former Duke University associate head coach Jai Lucas as the new head coach for the Hurricanes’ men’s basketball program. Lucas is 36, the youngest high-major basketball head coach in history, and comes to Miami with a fresh perspective plus plenty of experience.

Background and Coaching Experience

Jai Lucas, a product of a retired NBA player and coach John Lucas II, emerged as one of the most distinguished names in the college basketball coaching fraternity. He started his career in college coaching with the University of Texas (2016-2020), then joined the University of Kentucky (2020-2022). Lucas became a member of the Duke University coaching team in 2022 and became associate head coach in 2023. Well-known for his master recruiting and defense concepts, Lucas was a crucial person in getting top-class talent to the teams he coached.

Transition from Duke to Miami

The Lucas recruitment comes after the retirement of former Miami head coach Jim Larrañaga in December 2024. Larrañaga led the Hurricanes to their first Final Four in 2023. He noted that he was tired and had concerns about the evolving nature of college sports, including Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) policy and the transfer portal, as reasons for his retirement.

Lucas’s recruitment to Miami must bring new vigor to the program. His position as a high-level recruiter would mesh well with Miami’s attempt to go for top recruits and compete at college basketball’s best level. Duke head coach Jon Scheyer had no doubt about Lucas’s preparedness to be the head coach, stating, “Absolutely, he’s a head coach, no question about it. The job he’s done for us has been incredible.”.

Challenges Ahead

The Miami Hurricanes have had a tough 2024-2025 season, sitting at a 6-22 record and struggling in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) competition. Lucas’s first order of business will be to turn the team around, create a winning culture, and deal with the intricacies brought about by NIL and transfer portal dynamics. His capacity to connect with players and adjust to the contemporary collegiate basketball landscape will be essential in doing so.

With Lucas taking the reins of the Miami men’s basketball program, a turnaround is expected. His age, combined with a solid coaching background, puts him in a position to connect well with student-athletes and navigate the issues of modern college basketball. The Miami community looks forward to what Lucas can do for the future of the program, hoping to regain ACC stature and find long-term success.
