At Newark Liberty International Airport on March 7, 2025, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers found a live turtle hidden in the pants of a passenger during a normal security screening. The passenger, an East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, resident, was on his way to his destination when the surprise discovery created a string of events that resulted in a missed flight and possible legal consequences.

Discovery During Security Screening

The episode occurred when the passenger activated an alarm when going through the airport body scanner, in the groin region. The TSA officials reacted by conducting a pat-down to determine the anomaly. As part of the scan, the subject confessed to having something hidden in his trousers and went ahead and pulled out a live turtle swaddled in a blue cloth from his groin region. The turtle was determined to be a red-eared slider, a type of turtle often kept as a pet, which was about five inches long.

Immediate Actions Taken

After the discovery, the Port Authority Police were alerted and quickly responded. They interviewed the traveler and appropriated the turtle. The man missed his departing flight and was escorted out of the security checkpoint area by law enforcement officers. Officials said they would call the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and local animal control officials to decide on the proper handling and care of the turtle.

TSA Response and Statement

Thomas Carter, the Federal Security Director for New Jersey with TSA, praised the professionalism of the officers involved in the case. According to him, although TSA officers had dealt with different concealed objects during security checks, this was the first case of a live animal concealed in this way. Carter said, “We have witnessed tourists attempt to hide knives and other weapons on their bodies, in their feet and in their luggage; however, I think this is the first time we.” He also confirmed that, to the best of their knowledge, the turtle was not injured.

Potential Legal and Ethical Considerations

The reasons behind the man hiding the turtle in his apparel are still unclear. No one has been able to confirm whether the turtle belonged to him or if there was any other explanation for trying to carry it like this.

An investigation into the incident has not indicated whether or not the visitor will be charged or punished. Hauling live animals through airport security involves following certain regulations in order to maintain the welfare and safety of the animals as well as the public traveling. Noncompliance with these regulations has legal implications and raises ethical issues related to animal welfare.

Public and Media Reaction The rare nature of this incident has attracted a lot of attention from the public and media platforms. Outlets have pointed out how uncommon this act is and the dilemmas of TSA officials in dealing with unusual security cases. The case has also attracted some social media comments, with users reacting with both laughter and worry at the attempt to sneak a live animal in such a way.

This Newark Liberty International Airport incident highlights the importance of TSA officers in ensuring security and safety at transportation facilities. It is also a reminder to travelers of the need to follow set guidelines when transporting animals to ensure the health of the animals and adherence to legal requirements.
