The UConn Huskies women’s basketball program decisively crushed the South Carolina Gamecocks 82-59 on April 6, 2025, at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, to take their 12th NCAA National Championship. It was the first national championship won by UConn since 2016 and confirmed their superiority again over women’s college basketball.

Dominant Performances Lead to Victory

The Huskies were No. 2 seeded when they came to the title game and demonstrated their excellent team play. They posted 24 points and were the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four: Senior guard Azzi Fudd. Freshman forward Sarah Strong had a huge impact on the game with her double-double, 24 points, and 15 rebounds, demonstrating maturity beyond her years on the national stage. Star guard Paige Bueckers, who is a projected No. 1 pick in next month’s WNBA Draft, scored 17 points, grabbed six rebounds, and had three assists, demonstrating her poise and leadership throughout the game.

Turning Point in the Third Quarter

The critical surge for UConn occurred during the third quarter, enabling them to increase their lead to 20 points, effectively clinching the game. UConn’s defense kept South Carolina’s offense guessing, while its own play on the other side was almost flawless, which testifies to the team’s preparation and determination.

An Emotional Win for Bueckers and Auriemma

For senior Paige Bueckers and head coach Geno Auriemma, the accolade meant more. Bueckers completed her career needing to win a national title in her senior year, having had a very injury-laden history. While she left the game to a standing ovation, she was seen hugging Auriemma, who battled tears. Post-match, Bueckers said of Auriemma, “I love that man more than words can describe.” Auriemma also stated, “I’ve never been happier than I’ve been the last couple of months coaching a team” when reflecting on the times.

Historical Relevance

The championship adds to the legendary tale of the UConn program but also ranks them as the most successful in college basketball history, leaving UCLA in the rear with its 11 championships. The win stands as a testament to the resolve and commitment to excellence that has characterized the program, especially following the nine-year title drought.

UConn holds a promising future with Bueckers departing for the pros, with stars like Fudd and Strong set to lead. Building on the depth and experience gained from this championship run, the team is well-positioned for success in the seasons to come.

UConn’s emphatic victory over South Carolina was more than a mere 12th national championship; it reaffirmed and cemented its place as a powerhouse in women’s college basketball that defines standard bearers of excellence and resilience.
