With his official resignation from the Trump administration, billionaire business tycoon Elon Musk has ended his time as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). His departure, which was confirmed on May 28, 2025, follows the completion of the 130-day term for Special Government Employees. The development has drawn national attention, especially as Musk appreciated former President Donald Trump alongside criticizing recent government expenses.
Musk’s DOGE Mission Comes to an End
Elon Musk was brought into the Trump administration earlier this year to lead a newly created initiative—DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency)—tasked with reducing federal waste. The goal was ambitious: to identify and cut up to $2 trillion in government spending. Although the actual projected savings landed closer to $150 billion by 2026, the initiative was widely seen as a symbolic effort to bring private sector efficiency to public operations.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Musk stated, “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending. The DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”
Conflict Over Federal Spending and the ‘Big Beautiful Bill’
Musk’s resignation followed his public criticism of Trump’s newly introduced “big beautiful bill,” a wide-ranging piece of legislation that significantly increases government spending. Musk took issue with what he called a reversal of DOGE’s goals, stating that the bill “undermines the mission” and would result in a ballooning national deficit.
Despite his appreciation for Trump’s support, Musk made it clear that he could not continue in his role while the administration pursued policies contrary to his fiscal reform goals. Sources close to the situation revealed that the White House began the offboarding process shortly after Musk voiced his objections.
White House and Public Response
A White House official confirmed Musk’s departure, explaining that the decision was at the senior staff level and that there was no explicit exit discussion between Trump and Musk. Musk’s role was acknowledged, though, and the official reiterated the administration’s commitment to advancing DOGE’s fundamental objectives.
The announcement has caused mixed reactions. Musk’s dedication to belt-tightening was lauded by some, while others scoffed at the modest effect DOGE saw under his leadership. Tesla and SpaceX shareholders, however, greeted the news for the most part with open arms since Musk’s political activities had been seen as a diversion from his primary business pursuits.
Musk Refocuses on Private Ventures
After leaving the government, Elon Musk plans to return to his focus on SpaceX, Tesla, and other projects. The exit also heralds a wider turn away from political involvement, which has been divisive for his companies and public persona.
Musk’s exit serves as a reminder of the challenges in integrating private sector principles into government operations. Although the DOGE experiment did not realize its broader aspirations, it was a novel effort to bring entrepreneurial responsibility into federal procedures.
