The Big Apple’s Most Instagrammable Sunset Is Back
This summer, New Yorkers are counting down for the return of Manhattanhenge. When the sun sets to the west over Manhattan, its light flows along its east-west streets and adds a warm glow to the city’s high-rises. During this time, both nature and city planning come together to make something special.
When to See Manhattanhenge in 2025
In 2025, Manhattanhenge will appear four times above the city. “Full Sun” can be seen in the evening on May 29 at 8:12 PM ET and July 11 at 8:20 PM ET. “Half Sun” can be viewed on May 28 at 8:13 PM ET and July 12 at 8:22 PM ET.
On “Full Sun” dates, the whole sun can be seen because it will set between the structures, but on “Half Sun” dates, only half of the sun will be above the horizon.
Best Places to Witness the Phenomenon
Positioning is what it takes to make the most out of Manhattanhenge. The following are some of the best viewing spots:
- 14th Street
- 23rd Street
- 34th Street
- 42nd Street
- 57th Street
- Tudor City Overpass
- Long Island City’s Hunter’s Point South Park in Queens
These locations provide unobstructed views of the horizon so that witnesses may appreciate the alignment of the sun with the city grid fully.
Advice for Having the Best View Possible
- Get to the location 30 to 40 minutes ahead of sunset so you can get the perfect view.
- See what the forecast is: Clear weather is best for stargazing, so make sure you check ahead.
- Don’t forget your camera! The places here offer great photography, so you should definitely get some shots.
The Science of Manhattanhenge
Neil deGrasse Tyson, an astrophysicist, compared the “Manhattanhenge” event in New York to Stonehenge in England, where the sun aligns with that monument only twice a year. Because Manhattan’s grid tilts 29 degrees from true east-west; the shadows are not straight. Because of the alignment, the setting sun shines directly down the streets on certain days each year.
Take part in a Unique City Adventure
Manhattanhenge is as much about the sunset as it is about how city planning links with the universe. For those in the city or traveling, seeing this event reminds us about the beauty that results from nature and city life connecting.
That being the case, don’t miss the date and prepare to be amazed by this incredible view in New York City.
