A huge winter storm is set to hit 14 U.S. states today with heavy snow, freezing rain, and hazardous road conditions. Winter storm warnings have been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) for different areas, alerting citizens of the extreme weather conditions in the central and eastern United States.

A winter storm warning is called when snowfall totals a minimum of six inches in 12 hours or eight inches in 24 hours, or when half an inch of sleet is predicted. They are more serious than regular winter weather advisories, which are called for smaller snowfalls, or winter storm watches, which indicate that extreme weather is possible.

There are currently 28 states with winter weather advisories and 11 states with flash flood watches. The advisories are because the storm has the potential for bringing hazardous travel, especially to locations like Milwaukee, Chicago, Grand Rapids, and Detroit. NWS predicted that heavy clumps of snow may fall as a rate of a rate of an inch per hour, and also during the times of rush hours in the evenings, traveling would become hazardous.

Aside from snow, the storm also brings a mixture of freezing rain and sleet, which will increase the power outage and damage to trees danger level. Weather officials are urging residents to get off the road and prepare themselves for possible disturbances.

The origin of the storm traces back to a high pressure in the Arctic that is pushing cold air south through the U.S. At the same time, the Gulf’s moisture is flowing north, supplementing the power of the storm. When this system meets at a low-pressure area, it is making the winter weather presently sweep through the region.

Besides the sleet, ice, and snow, the storm is also predicted to interfere with ordinary life significantly. As the storm moves further east, it is likely to affect millions of people and leave them exposed to a variety of risks throughout the entire world. The best approach is to refrain from driving where possible and keep prepared for possible power outages.

Residents are advised to keep an eye on local weather conditions and take heed of all warnings and advisories issued by the National Weather Service to remain safe throughout this significant winter storm.
