The sudden death of 14-year-old Miller Gardner, whose father is veteran New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, left everyone wanting explanations. Miller was killed on March 21, 2025, while he was on holiday with his family in Costa Rica. Initial claims indicated asphyxiation caused his death, but this has been confirmed otherwise by authorities in Costa Rica.

Incident Overview

When vacationing in Manuel Antonio, a major resort community along Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, the Gardner family ate at one of the area’s local restaurants. Shortly afterwards, a few members of the family, among them Miller, became ill. The next day, Miller was discovered lifeless in his hotel room.

Official Statements and Findings

The Costa Rican Judicial Investigation Department (OIJ) originally thought of asphyxiation through potential food poisoning. But OIJ spokesman Juan Pablo Alvarado Garcia later explained that this was eliminated as a cause, citing no blockage in Miller’s airway, although there were some traces of vomit.

Additional tests, such as histology, toxicology, and neuropathology tests, are being conducted to ascertain the exact cause of death. The results are expected in two to three months.

Family’s Reaction

Brett and Jessica Gardner shared their deep sorrow in a statement made by the New York Yankees:

We are deeply saddened to report the passing of our youngest son, Miller. He was 14 and had left us much too early after becoming ill along with several other members of our family during a vacation. We have far more questions and very few answers at this point, but we do know he died peacefully in his sleep.

They described Miller as a beloved son and brother, highlighting his infectious smile and passion for activities like football, baseball, golf, hunting, and fishing. The family has requested privacy during this challenging time.

Community and Organizational Support

The New York Yankees organization conveyed its condolences:

Words are meaningless and inadequate in attempting to articulate such an unimaginable tragedy. It wasn’t only Brett who literally grew up in this organization for over 17 years—so did his wife, Jessica, and their two children, Hunter and Miller. We mourn with Brett, Jessica, Hunter, and their network of family and friends in grieving the loss of Miller.

The Arenas Del Mar Beachfront & Rainforest Resort, where the family lodged, also conveyed sincere sorrow and declared their cooperation with the authorities.

Ongoing Investigation

The authorities are still looking into possible reasons, such as food poisoning, considering the family’s reported illness after eating at a restaurant. The U.S. State Department is keeping a close eye on the situation, and attempts are being made to repatriate Miller’s remains to the United States.

As the case unfolds, the Gardner family, friends, and supporters look forward to understanding this senseless tragedy.
