Lawrence J. “Larry” Dolan, the esteemed owner of the Cleveland Guardians baseball franchise, died at the age of 94 on February 23, 2025. A lifelong resident of Cleveland, Dolan’s period of ownership saw significant contributions to both the team and the local community.
Acquisition and Guardianship of the Guardians
In 2000, Dolan purchased the Cleveland baseball franchise-the Indians-at an approximate cost of $320 million from the former owner Richard Jacobs. The purchase made the Dolan family hold the longest ownership term in the team’s history. During his period of ownership, the team achieved greater success, including seven AL Central Division titles and nine playoff appearances. One of the highlights of his ownership was when his team reached the World Series in 2016, only to fall to the Chicago Cubs in an epic seven-game series.
Commitment to the Community and Philanthropy
Outside of the ballpark, Dolan was highly involved in the community in Cleveland. His philanthropic contributions cut across the board into areas such as law, education, and community charities. Bob DiBiasio, the senior vice president of public affairs for the Guardians, expressed that “Mr. Dolan devoted his entire life to Greater Cleveland and made a significant impact on our community in various ways.”
Transition of Leadership
In 2013, Paul Dolan, a son of Dolan, would become the primary control of the team with respect to the continuation of the family legacy in the leadership of the organization. Under Paul’s ownership, massive changes were brought to the team, such as, after the 2021 season, its renaming from the Indians to the Guardians choice championed by Larry Dolan as a defense against charges regarding cultural sensitivity.
Personal Background
Larry Dolan, originally from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, earned his degree from Notre Dame and served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Marines. The service commitment to the community infused his life, as did such other factors as his team ownership and civic engagement.
Legacy and Tributes
Major League Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred Jr. expressed his condolences, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Larry Dolan, a native of Cleveland, whose family has been a part of the community for twenty-five years.”
Larry Dolan is survived by his spouse, along with six children and 21 grandchildren. His death is the end of an era for the Cleveland Guardians, but his legacy of service to the team and the city of Cleveland will be remembered and treasured by many.
