2024 brought a quiet revolution to the camera industry, highlighted by DJI’s Neo drone, a budget-friendly game-changer that captured imaginations globally. While traditional mirrorless cameras like Canon EOS R5 II and Fujifilm X100 VI shone with incremental innovations, DJI’s $200 Neo democratized aerial photography.
The Neo, launched in September, combines ease of use with advanced AI features. It is designed for creators and beginners, with a lightweight drone that requires no license to fly. Shrouded propellers ensure safety, and the user-friendly design allows instant deployment. AI-powered tracking and 4K 30p video capabilities make it a favorite among vloggers and casual photographers. Minor setbacks, such as its loud operation, were not enough to damper its affordability and versatility, making it a standout product in 2024.
DJI had a rather turbulent year with the constant threat of an American government ban due to security reasons. Public safety groups advocating for the firm were able to secure it a reprieve until the end of 2025, providing it with the opportunity to prove its dependability.
The EOS R5 II was a mirrorless camera contender in the game with hybrid functionality, balanced with a 45MP stacked sensor, advanced AI autofocus, and the ability to shoot 8K RAW at 60fps, offering a balance between speed, resolution, and ease of use. Fujifilm’s X100 VI found great appreciation for its retro design and compact body and combined that with a compelling 40MP sensor, great film simulations, and all that.
Panasonic’s S9 also deserves recognition as a compact full-frame camera pushing boundaries. It has been set to a new level for hybrid devices with features like 6K video, in-body stabilization, and LUT simulations on videos.
Exciting times are ahead in the industry. DJI is expected to announce the foldable DJI Flip and successors to its popular models. Fujifilm is expected to launch a half-sensor compact like the Pentax 17, while updates from Canon, Sony, and Nikon are also in the pipeline. Compact cameras, which were reborn by Fujifilm, may be an inspiration for new ideas on the board.
2024 was that year where even incremental updates could bring innovation and shake the status quo. The DJI Neo made creativity more accessible.
