Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. on Monday raised its electrified car sales goals and said it will increase powertrain production in the United States as it looks to catch up in a segment dominated by newer automakers such as Tesla Inc.

With its all-battery-powered Leaf, the Japanese automaker was an innovator in electric vehicles (EVs), but it has struggled alongside numerous legacy auto manufacturers in the midst of growing rivalry from nimbler new competitors.

Nissan has raised its target for electrified vehicles, which include its advanced hybrid e-power vehicles, to more than 55% of global sales by fiscal 2030, up from 50% previously.

According to a statement by the automaker, it is going to launch 27 new electrified vehicles by the same year out of which 19 will be all-battery EVs. In comparison, its previous plan called for 23 electrified vehicles, including 15 all-battery EVs.

Chief Operating Officer, Ashwani Gupta, said on Monday, in addition to EV production at its Smyrna, Tennessee plant, Nissan plans to manufacture electric power trains at its Decherd plant in the same state to help fulfill criterias for the Inflation Reduction Act.

Nissan is confident that it will be in accordance with the Act once localization begins in the calendar year 2026, according to Gupta in an online briefing.
