The New Orleans Saints have solidified their defensive front by re-signing defensive end Chase Young to a three-year, $51 million contract with potential incentives, bringing the total to $57 million. The signing is a testament to the team’s commitment to keeping a solid defense for future NFL seasons.

Chase Young’s NFL Career

Chase Young signed with the NFL as the second overall draft pick in 2020 by the Washington Commanders. He became a force immediately, registering 7.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, and four forced fumbles in his rookie year, being awarded the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award as well as getting selected to a Pro Bowl.

Although, Young’s subsequent seasons were marred by injuries, and he played just 12 games over two years and a paltry 1.5 sacks. In 2023, he began to get back into shape, with five sacks and 18 quarterback pressures in seven games before being traded to the San Francisco 49ers. With the 49ers, Young had 2.5 sacks in nine games and recorded a sack in Super Bowl LVIII.

Revitalization with the Saints

In March 2024, Young inked a one-year, $13 million “prove it” contract with the New Orleans Saints. He took advantage of that opportunity, appearing in all 17 games and logging 5.5 sacks, eight tackles for loss, and a personal best 34 quarterback pressures and 21 quarterback hits.

Young’s consistent play was key to the Saints’ defense and resulted in the lucrative multi-year contract extension. The deal is worth $27 million guaranteed at signing, an indication of how much faith the organization has in his potential for future production.

Strategic Fit in the Saints’ Defense

The hiring of Saints’ defensive coordinator Brandon Staley is a signal to switch to a 3-4 defense. Young’s athleticism and all-around ability will fit perfectly with the system, and perform well as an edge rusher. He is expected to make the team a better pass-rushing and defensive unit.

By signing Young’s services for the next three years, the Saints hope to improve their competitiveness in the NFC South. Keeping a vital pass rusher is part of the team’s plan to have a strong defense, which is essential for their plans in the coming seasons.
