Severe Turbulence Forces United Express Flight to Divert, Injuring Five Passengers

An emergency landing was made at Waco Regional Airport in Texas by a United Express flight operated by SkyWest Airlines on Sunday, March 2, 2025, due to severe turbulence. Five passengers suffered injuries from the unexpected turbulence and were later admitted to the hospital.

The Flight Incident Report

Takeoff from Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri and then by SkyWest Flight 5690 into George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston-the airplane operates a route from Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri to Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport. The flight is made up of 29 passengers and three crew members. After about one hour of the flight, the plane encountered bad air when there was a strong storm system that was moving across Texas. This off-air disturbance resulted in the call to redirect the flight into Waco, Texas, for the safety of all persons on board.

Response to Emergencies and Passenger Remedies

Once at Waco Regional Airport, which was a little after 6:30 p.m., there was an immediate encounter with emergency medical personnel, culminating in the admission of the five persons as the less-than-life-threatening injured five were transported to a nearby hospital for assessment and treatment. SkyWest Airlines, in conjunction with its mother company United Airlines, also ensured that all injured passengers would be provided with adequate medical attention and arranged for alternative travel for all of them.

Weather Conditions and Other Flight Diversions

The concept of turbulence during United Express Flight 5690 was reinforced by a very strong storm system traversing across the Northern parts of Texas. Much of this disturbance was also felt by many other Aircraft flights, apart from the United Express flight. For instance, two American Airlines flights that were supposed to operate to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport were diverted to Waco Regional Airport because of bad weather conditions.

Following the incident, the United Express aircraft was subjected to ground holding at Waco Regional Airport as part of a comprehensive mechanical inspection before it was declared airworthy. For passenger safety, SkyWest Airlines and United Airlines reaffirmed their dedication and prompted a review of procedures to mitigate in-flight turbulence incidents.

Incidents Recently Bear Relevance

This case adds to a series of several such events in the airline’s territory within a shorter time regarding turbulence and emergencies. Among these include a diversion at Orlando of a United Airlines flight from Miami to Newark in July because a disruptive passenger forced the action. Also, in March, a United Airlines flight made an emergency landing in New York after experiencing severe turbulence, which affected 22 passengers.

The incident of SkyWest Flight 5690 is a prototypical example of how things can indeed happen at the most unfortunate time when they come around in cases of in-flight turbulence. Airlines always emphasize how procedures are modified along with training to improve passenger safety. One area of passenger safety is using seat belts/freezing passengers on their seats during sudden turbulence.
