OpenAI’s ambitions for ChatGPT extend far beyond its current capabilities. An internal strategy document, disclosed during the U.S. Department of Justice’s antitrust case against Google, outlines a roadmap for the first half of 2025. The goal is to develop a “super assistant” that not only understands user preferences but also connects to the internet, assisting with a wide array of tasks.
“Today, ChatGPT is in our lives through existing form factors — our website, phone, and desktop apps. But our vision for ChatGPT is to help you with all of your life, no matter where you are,” the document states.
Assistance Across All Contexts
OpenAI envisions ChatGPT as a ubiquitous presence:
- At home: Helping with questions, streaming music, and offering recipe ideas.
- On the go: Providing directions, recommending restaurants, and facilitating social connections.
- At work: Take meeting notes and prepare presentations.
- During personal time: Offering reflections, helping users unwind.
The assistant aims to be as helpful as a “smart, trustworthy, emotionally intelligent person with a computer,” capable of managing tasks like finding a home, contacting professionals, planning vacations, and more.
Hardware Integration with Jony Ive
To bring this vision to life, OpenAI has partnered with Jony Ive, the former Apple design chief. Together, they’re developing a new AI device designed to reduce screen dependence and integrate seamlessly into users’ lives. The device is expected to be compact, possibly screenless, and equipped with a microphone and camera to remain contextually aware.
This collaboration is backed by significant resources, including OpenAI’s $6.5 billion acquisition of Ive’s company, io, and investment from Laurene Powell Jobs. The aim is to create a device that complements existing technology, potentially redefining human-AI interaction.
Positioning for the Future
OpenAI recognizes it’s competing in a crowded field, with challengers such as Apple’s Siri, Google’s Gemini, and Meta’s range of AI tools. However, the company believes it has the necessary assets to succeed: a rapidly growing user base, a strong brand, advanced research capabilities, and a commitment to innovation.
“We have what we need to win: one of the fastest-growing products of all time, a category-defining brand, a research lead (reasoning, multimodal), a compute lead, a world-class research team, and an increasing number of effective people with agency who are motivated to ship,” the document asserts.
